The Brookes Family of Stourpaine, Dorset, England Elias Brookes [c.1706-1785] died Testate Spouse: Elizabeth [nee unknown] [c. 1710?- 1768 A Maternal Scard Family - North Dorset James Scard married Elizabeth Brookes by Licence on the 8th September 1762 “both of Stourpaine”.
Elias Brookes, Yeoman of Stourpaine, Dorset is estimated born around 1700-1705. He is considered to be related to the Brookes Family resident around Dorchester, Dorset, the family using similar biblical names. Elias appears to have had little literacy skills, signing his Will with his Mark in 1785. Elias Brookes married Elizabeth [nee unknown] possibly around 1730 and was known to be resident at Charlton Marshall, a small village in North Dorset later moving to Stourpaine at some point between 1739-1785. Issue; Elias & Elizabeth baptised seven children at St. Mary's, Charlton Marshall of which only three daughters were mentioned in Elias' Will; Child 1: Elias Brooks [the younger] baptised 22nd August 1731 son of Elias & Elizabeth Brooks Charlton Marshall Child 2: Robert Brooks baptised 13th March 1732 son of Elias & Elizabeth Brooks Charlton Marshall Possibly the same 'Robert Brooks' buried at Stourpaine August ye 17th 1771 Child 3: Francis Brooks baptised 11th August 1735 son of Elias & Elizabeth Brooks Charlton Marshall [twin?] Child 4: Elizabeth Brooks baptised 11th August 1735 son of Elias & Elizabeth Brooks Charlton Marshall [twin?] Child 5: [Unnamed] Brooks baptised 19th November 1736 son of Elias & Elizabeth Brooks Charlton Marshall Child 5: John Brooks baptised 19th October 1738 son of Elias & Elizabeth Brooks Charlton Marshall Child 7: Elizabeth Brooks baptised 24th January 1739 Charlton Marshall – Beneficiary in the Will of her father. The move to Stourpaine, North Dorset; At some point after between 1739 and 1762 Elias left Carlton Marshall and journeyed to North Dorset to the village of Stourpaine where he lived in a Tenement comprising a Cottage, Orchard and Garden . He remained at Stourpaine until his death in 1786. Daughter Elizabeth Brookes marries; His daughter Elizabeth Brookes married James Scard, a widower and miller, by Licence on the 8th September 1762 both recorded 'of Stourpaine'. Elizabeth & James Scard had five children; John Scard baptised 1763 Thomas Scard baptised 1765 , who does not appear to have survived. Elizabeth Scard baptised 1768 James Scard baptised 1770 Maria Scard baptised 1777 Daughter Christian Brookes marries; His daughter Christian Brookes, married unknown Gear [possibly 'Robert'] at some point. Christian is known to have had one child; Robert Gear born: date unknown. [appears to be very young in 1785] Daughter Angel Brookes marries; His daughter Angel Brookes married unknown Thaine at some point. Angel's spouse may very well have been in HM Service. Angel is known to have had two surviving children*; Elias Brookes Thaine born 1776. [Elias enlisted in Royal Navy. He married - his details are in the Epilogue] Mary Ann Thaine born [date unknown] [the younger sibling]. *The writer remembers Researching Angel's children some months previous and found her to be in Wiltshire where she had at least two baptisms recorded with only her own name 'Angel Thaine' [father's name not recorded]. The notes have been misplaced. Elias Brookes prepares his Will; On the 13th July 1785 Elias prepared his Will. Also I give and bequeath to my granddaughter Mary Ann Thaine the sum of fifty pounds to be paid at her age of twenty-one years and in case she shall die before she shall attain her said age, the same shall go and belong to her brother Elias Brookes Thaine. Also I give and bequeath to my grandson the said Elias Brookes Thaine, the dwelling house, tenement, orchard and garden where I now live situate in Stourpaine aforesaid to hold to him, his executors and administrators for the reside of the Term and Interest. I leave whereupon condition and [?] that he shall from time to time permit and suffer my daughter Angel Thaine and my said granddaughter Mary Ann Thaine (as they or other of them [?] [?]) to dwell and inhabit therein or forfeit and pay to each of them the sum of ten pounds on his refusal so to so or deny or disturbing them therein. Also I give and bequeath to my grandson Robert Gear, son of my daughter Christian Gear the sum of fifty pounds to be paid at his age of twenty five years and interest forthwith same at the rate of four pounds ten shillings by the hundred from the year of his attaining the age of twenty-one and in case he shall die before he shall attain his said age twenty five years the same to go to and be divided between the children of my said daughters Elizabeth Scard and Angel Thaine equally Then as to all the rest residue of my goods and chattels, effects, furniture [?] and wearing apparel all other of my Estate whatsoever and wheresoever I give and dispose thereof as followeth (that is to say) I give and bequeath one [?] or part thereof unto my daughter Elizabeth Scard and the other [?] or half part thereof I give and bequeath to Samuel Gulliver of Orchard in the County of Dorset in trust for the children of my said daughter Angel Thaine namely the said Elias Brooke Thaine and Mary Ann Thaine to be paid to them at their respective ages of twenty one years and if either of them shall die under that age the part of him or her so dying to go and belong to the survivor of them. On the 18th day of August in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty six administration (with the Will annexed) of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of Elias Brookes late of Stourpaine in the County of Dorset deceased was granted to Elizabeth Scard (wife of James Scard) the natural and lawful daughter of the said deceased and one of the residuary legatees named in the said Will leaven [?] first sworn - - - - - - - duly to administer Samuel Gulliver otherwise Gulliver the sole executor name in the said Will first nominated this executor thereof. Note: The nominated Executor Samuel Gulliver appears to have died or not well enough to be granted Administration of the Estate. Elizabeth died testate in 1800, a widow, at the age of sixty-four.
Christian Gear [nee Brookes] daughter of Elias Brookes; No further information has been found for Christian or her son Robert. Angel Thaine [nee Brookes] daughter of Elias Brookes; No further information has been found for Angel. Elias Brookes Thaine grandson of Elias Brookes by his daughter Angel. 'Born May ye 31st 1776 and baptised June ye 8th 1776' at Stourpaine Elias Brookes Thaine entered HM Service. Elias Thaine married Claudina Omedia in 1812 the notice of his marriage appeared in the Selected Reports from the Salisbury and Winchester Journal - Newspapers; Salisbury March 23rd 1812; ' On the 19th December was married, at Messina, Lieut. E.B. Thaine, 10th Regiment a foot to Miss Claudina Omedia, only daughter of D. Fredrico Omedia, Major and Governor of the Garrison of Tormina, Sicily." He appears again in the 'Gentleman's Magazine 1840" ' Obituaries; Lately; Capt. Elias Brookes Thaine formerly of the 10th a foot Regiment, at Malta, aged 64." Simon Thaine of Mr. William Thaine and Angil his wife was baptised December ye 25 1778 at Stourpaine buried Oct ye 11th 1771 Mary Ann Thaine granddaughter of Elias Brookes by his daughter Angel. Baptised 'Mary Ann dafter [daughter] of Mr. Willm Thaine and Angel his wife was baptised June ye 25th 1769 at Stourpaine
